Communication Service Module

Technology name

The Communication Service Module is a tool or a middleware allowing applications and users to utilise easily different heterogeneous communication networks, such as WLAN, UMTS etc, roam between them and apply advanced network protocols, like Ad Hoc, Mobile IP, supporting roaming and direct communication.

Technology type

Software & Drivers

Description

The Communication Service Module provides an interface to applications and smart network function of the framework, allowing selecting a profile for the communication session of an application. This profile contains the QoS, security and cost requirements for the communication session. Based on the selected and activated profiles of all applications the Communication Service Module selects the most suitable communication technologies, networks and services and activates them. Via the status information the application and/or framework can be informed about the available network quality. The Communication Service Module updates the network connection in case of changing network availability. If the selected profiles can be served, this is transparent to the application. Otherwise the application is informed via the status information.

Use in wearIT@work project

The Communication Service Module will be used in all wearIT@work trials and experiments.

Status

A first version is available for Linux and Windows XP and can be used in all trials and showcases. This allows the communication capabilities to be gradually improved without the need to update the application accordingly.
