Testing Methodology and procedures
In the Figure above the test procedure and the according times are represented for each subject. It was agreed to perform the input and output test sequential in order to simplify the organisation and planning of the tests.
It starts with a general introduction and the explanation of the equipment to be used. The subject then puts on the vest with the corresponding equipment. It is suitable to start with the “Pointing device” (Hand mouse) and then proceed with the “Data glove” and the “Voice command” in order to accommodate the user with a known input method (and therewith taking them the test-inherent fear) and then increasing the level of innovation by taking unknown devices (e.g. data glove).
Each Input method-test (Pointing Device, Data glove, Voice-Command) is accompanied by a 3 minutes accommodation phase for the subject. After the user passed the accommodation phase the tests is performed. It happens in a sequential way so that e.g. starting with the “Pointing-Device” the subject at first gets an accommodation phase for the Pointing-Device system and then performs the test on this system. Each test consists of three tasks with a progressive number of navigation and click events. After having performed this test the next accommodation phase begins, and so on.
The three input tests have been performed before getting to the output tests that consists of four different media types of representation of the same or similar information. The procedure that has been performed in the test is a subtask of a maintenance procedure that has in the core the searching and pressing of a specific circuit breaker on Panel 800VU. An accommodation phase for the output test was not foreseen.
