Participants in the Tests
Several studies were carried out during training exercises conducted by fire fighters from the Paris Fire Brigade at their training site in March 2007. These studies included the reference measurements of the LifeNet implementation using the sensor nodes from the Relate project, the Wizard of Oz simulation of positioning technologies, the use of the command post system prototype and an initial usability evaluation of the virtual prototyping environment. During these studies, 12 fire fighters carried out search and rescue missions in the training house in different configurations of two-men attack teams, team leaders and command post officers. These fire fighters additionally carried out one search and rescue mission each in the virtual environment. As the virtual environment was set up in the cafeteria, there were a number of additional fire fighters that had not specifically been invited or ordered to take part in the evaluation but also carried out simulated missions.
The PDR system has been evaluated by users that simply took specific routes in the TZI facility in Bremen and has also been tried by local fire fighters in the same building.
The networking component was also successfully used during the training exercises mentioned above but only in the sense of continuous connectivity and not with respect to further performance measures.
For the studies in 2008 it is planned to conduct interviews on social factors using the questionnaire developed by Edna Pasher Consulting and already used in the other scenarios.
